House Culwick
Residential Architecture
We loved this renovation of a classic mining house in Melville, which sat on a ridge with panoramic views of Johannesburg’s City Centre and the distant Magaliesberg mountain range beyond. Our approach was to embrace the principle of architecture being the intersection between landscape and man, and immerse the house with its environment.
This included the vernacular architecture of the surroundings, embracing a parasitic architecture approach to create a juxtaposition between old and new, resulting in a fantastically unique aesthetic. Dissecting the existing roof, we created a platform and pod to serve as a multifunctional entertainment area.
