Dlala Nje (Just play in Isi Zulu) is a fantastic nonprofit organization that is based at Ponte towers in Hilbrow, Johannesburg. Dlala Nje raise funds through running inner-city immersions and experiences in Johannesburg’s forgotten parts of the city. These immersions help pay for a community center that offers a safe environment for the children of ‘Ponte Tower’ to learn and socialize. MILarchi is extremely proud to be part of the Dlala Nje team and we aim to help them wherever we can in the running of their organization.
MILarchi aims to do at least 25 % of our work in the social field every year. This is our way of giving back to the various struggling communities that surround us and that are present within modern south Africa. We have worked on many projects with Dlala Nje and continue to work on exciting ideas moving into the future. This particular project was the designing of a meeting space and bar on the 51st floor of Ponte towers.
The brief was to take an existing apartment in Ponte and to turn it into a new events space/ bar. This would allow the tours that are hosted by Dlala Nje to end on the 51st floor and the guests could have a drink and watch the sun set over Johannesburg. As a result, we had to design the space in such a way the view was never hindered. We ended up demolishing much of the existing walls in the apartment as to open up the entire floor plan to the massively entrancing horizontal view of the inner-city skyline. We then placed all of the ‘servicing’ spaces at the rear of the plan, this created a situation where all spaces opened up forwards towards the view. One of the old bedrooms was converted into the bathrooms with much emphasis placed on keeping the view unblocked. We took this concept to the point where the sink had to be placed on the glass line and it as a result mader entirely out of glass itself.
